How BMI is calculated
Body Mass Index divides your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. It is a quick population-level screening tool: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is the healthy range, 25–29.9 is overweight and 30+ is obese.
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²Frequently asked questions
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not always. BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, so muscular people can read as overweight despite low body fat. Pair it with a body fat estimate for a fuller picture. This is general information, not medical advice.
What is a healthy BMI?
The WHO healthy range for adults is 18.5–24.9. Some guidelines for Asian populations use a lower overweight cutoff of 23. Talk to a doctor about what is right for you.
Does BMI apply to children?
Not with adult cutoffs. Children and teens are assessed with age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles. This calculator is intended for adults.
